I need your advice Islamically. I am a breastfeeding mum and my baby is still small. I just discovered today that I am pregnant and it is 2 weeks or less than, my body is not ready. So please is abortion permissible this stage. Waiting for your response sir.

I have addressed the issue of abortion extensively in a number of prior fatwa's. In response to your question, scholars of Islam allow for abortions if there is a serious threat to the life or health of the mother. Jurists from the Hanafi school of law but also from other schools allow a mother to abort the fetus in the first trimester if the mother would suffer negative health consequences or, as in some cases, the mother is too weak, unhealthy or fragile to give birth to a second child while still breastfeeding an earlier child. It is important to emphasize that if the mother is unhealthy or too weak to give birth so soon after a prior birth that the abortion take place within the first 120 days. I would also recommend that you consult with physicians in order to become better informed as to the medical consequences of bearing a second child so soon. And only Allah knows best.
